Peace Sunday 2026
The date of Peace Sunday is set by Mennonite World Conference (MWC) and generally falls on the Sunday closest to the United Nations’ International Day of Peace on September 21. In 2026, Peace Sunday will be observed on September 20. This year’s theme is “Solidarity: from power over to power with.” Each year, MWC provides churches around the world with worship resources, prayers, reflections, and other materials to help shape their services.
MWC’s Peace Commission introduced Peace Sunday in 2006, choosing a date closely connected to the International Day of Peace. The United Nations established that day in 1981, and it was first observed the following year. Since 2001, September 21 has been designated as an annual day of nonviolence and ceasefire—a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace within and among nations and peoples.
As a peace church, we join our Anabaptist siblings around the world in observing this Sunday. Together, we raise an urgent and unmistakable cry for peace.
Yet the peace we seek cannot be reduced to the absence of war. Following Jesus, we call for a peace that confronts and seeks to overcome every form of violence—a peace rooted in justice, reconciliation, dignity, and restored relationships. Peace Sunday reminds us that peace is not only something we hope for. It is a way of life to which we are called.

Friedenssonntag – Peace Sunday – Domingo de Paz – Dimanche de la Paix
Das Datum des Friedenssonntags wird von der Mennonitischen Weltkonferenz festgelegt. Im Normalfall ist es der Sonntag, der dem Internationalen Friedenstag der Vereinten Nationen am 21. September am nächsten liegt.
Als Friedenskirche feiern Mennonit:innen diesen Sonntag mit den täuferischen Geschwistern weltweit – es ist ein lauter Schrei nach und für Frieden. Ein Frieden, der sich nicht mit der Abwesenheit von Krieg zufriedengibt, sondern der die Überwindung jeglicher Gewalt verlangt.
Der Friedenssonntag 2026 ist auf den 20. September festgelegt.
Dies ist der zweite gemeinsame Sonntag, den wir im September weltweit nach dem „Creation Sunday” feiern.
